The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) participated in the International Science Council’s (ISC) Global Knowledge Dialogue, held recently in Muscat, Oman. Moderating the session Beyond Borders: Science, Public Trust & Multilateral Policy, AAS Executive Director Dr. Peggy Oti-Boateng led panellists in demonstrating how science can be a powerful force for driving development, promoting peace, and fostering global unity. With leaders in science, policy, and academia in attendance, the discussions explored how science can address pressing global challenges such as climate change, global health, inequality, and technological advancements, while promoting sustainability and equity.

Dr. Oti-Boateng emphasized the importance of embedding science in decision-making processes at all levels, advocating for its potential to connect nations and create shared solutions. By placing science at the heart of development strategies, countries can tackle systemic challenges and ensure no region, particularly in Africa, is left behind in the global pursuit of progress.
A key outcome of the dialogue was the Muscat Declaration, which champions the use of science as a global public good. The declaration outlines actionable steps, including promoting open science, supporting under-resourced regions, and increasing the representation of women and marginalized groups in scientific leadership.
The forum called on global leaders, policymakers, and institutions to harness the power of science as a tool for development, peace, and cohesion. Science transcends boundaries, fostering shared understanding and collective action. The AAS remains committed to ensuring that African scientists are at the forefront of global efforts to create a more inclusive, peaceful, and sustainable world where science serves the greater good of humanity. Through initiatives like ARISE (African Research Initiative for Scientific Excellence) and APTI (African Postdoctoral Training Initiative), the AAS is empowering African researchers to drive innovative solutions to global challenges providing African solutions to global challenges.
