About ARISE

The African Research Initiative for Scientific Excellence (ARISE) is an innovative research and innovation (R&I) support programme of the African Academy of Sciences (AAS), implemented by the AAS in partnership with the African Union (AU) and the European Commission (EU). Founded on the AU-EU High-Level Policy Dialogue on Science, Technology, and Innovation, ARISE provides a vibrant platform and pathway for R&I exchanges in contribution to sustainable and inclusive development, economic growth, and job creation.

ARISE is funded by the European Union and co-funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

Our objectives

To enhance the capabilities of emerging African research leaders committed to a research and teaching career in Africa. This objective seeks to address the critical need for nurturing and supporting the next generation of African scholars who are dedicated to advancing knowledge and education within the continent. By providing resources, mentorship, and opportunities for skill development, this initiative aims to empower these emerging leaders to make significant contributions to their fields and communities.

Fellows representing the best research talent on the continent

ARISE fellows are competitively selected and tackle a diverse range of research topics from providing renewable energy solutions and addressing climate change, to addressing food security and targeting health and environmental problems that are most acute for people living in African countries.
